Sardinia Welcomes First-Ever Direct Flight from the US

A landmark moment for Sardinian aviation and transatlantic travel took place on May 20, 2026 with the arrival of Delta Air Lines’ inaugural flight from New York’s JFK Airport, marking the island’s first-ever direct scheduled connection with the United States.

The new JFK–Olbia route will operate four times weekly through October, representing a major advancement in Sardinia’s international connectivity and expanding access to key global markets. The service is expected to attract strong demand from North American travelers while supporting the region’s broader tourism and economic development goals.

The inaugural flight, carrying approximately 200 passengers, was welcomed at Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport with a traditional water cannon salute and an official ceremony celebrating the historic milestone. The launch signals an important new chapter in Sardinia’s global positioning and international outreach.

Strong demand on the first flight underscores the growing interest in Sardinia among North American travelers and reflects years of coordinated efforts involving international partnerships, strategic planning, and collaboration among local institutions, tourism leaders, and aviation stakeholders.

As part of PDDG’s ongoing international tourism marketing efforts, we are excited to announce Sardinia will be joining our 2027 destinations list.
