Graphic Designers Push Back on Overuse of AI
There is no doubt that artificial intelligence (AI) is entrenched in so many aspects of our daily lives. One area very close to home for us is the use of AI in the graphic design industry.
You may have noticed something strange happening to small-business flyers lately: they’re all starting to look the same. And no, it’s not because every local business owner suddenly enrolled in the same graphic design course. It’s AI.
AI-generated flyers are popping up everywhere, replacing the gloriously chaotic tradition of homemade design—the Photoshop masterpieces, Microsoft Paint disasters, and questionable fonts that somehow made local advertising feel human. From your neighborhood church’s car boot sale to the food truck parked on the corner, everyone now seems to have access to the same shiny, soulless visual toolbox.
The irony is that AI promises infinite creative possibilities, yet somehow keeps producing the visual equivalent of beige wallpaper. And nowhere is this more apparent than with AI-generated food imagery and menus, where a perfectly innocent hamburger can emerge looking like something that escaped from a Lovecraft novel.
The internet’s graphic designers have noticed. And they’re fighting back, one gloriously imperfect flyer at a time, arguing that maybe the weird fonts, awkward layouts and homemade graphics we once laughed at were actually the point. Because when everything can look perfect, perhaps looking a little terrible is what makes a design memorable.
If you, like us, prefer custom, human-created graphic design solutions, give us a call or drop us an email so we can join forces in pushing back on the overuse of AI in our industry.
