Sacramento Honors Greek-American Angelo Tsakopoulos With Key to the City on His 90th Birthday
Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty presented Greek-American Angelo K. Tsakopoulos with the Key to the City, honoring his 90th birthday and 75 years since he arrived in the United States from Rizes in the Tegea region of Arcadia, Greece. After arriving at age 15, Tsakopoulos spent a year in Chicago before settling in California, where he studied political science and business at California State University, Sacramento while working as a waiter and real estate salesman. He launched his Sacramento real estate business in 1963 and went on to build more than 40,000 homes and 30 million square feet of office space throughout Northern and Central California.
Beyond real estate, Tsakopoulos has made a lasting impact through philanthropy and his support for education, healthcare, and cultural institutions. He has donated resources and land for schools, libraries, museums, hospitals, and senior facilities, while supporting scholarships and academic programs at Sacramento State. His legacy also includes the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection at Sacramento State, an internationally recognized research collection featuring more than 80,000 volumes and archival materials documenting Greek history, culture, and the Greek-American experience.
Tsakopoulos’ journey from a teenager arriving in America to a prominent Sacramento developer and philanthropist reflects a decades-long commitment to both his adopted home and his Greek heritage. His contributions have helped shape the Sacramento region while preserving Hellenic history and culture for future generations. The Key to the City recognizes not only his business achievements, but also the enduring impact of his philanthropy, education initiatives, and commitment to the Greek-American community.
